Fine Books and Manuscripts

Sale Overview
Christie's South Kensington auction of Fine Printed Books and Manuscripts on 19th June comprises over 450 lots of an extremely diverse nature. From medieval illuminated manuscripts through to 20th-century Russian avant-garde books, virtually every book-collecting area is represented.
Two major collections of completely different pedigree dominate the sale. The first is the property of a Middle-Eastern collector. Formed in recent times, and by book-collecting standards rapidly assembled, the 170 lots feature antiquarian books, photobooks and erotica, modern first editions, travel and exploration, and sporting books.
The other collection is removed from the library at Encombe House, Dorset, the seat of John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon (1751-1838). "The greatest lawyer of his time" (ODNB), Lord Eldon's 43 lots reflects his deep involvement in law, politics and social issues.
