Christie's is pleased to present La bibliothèque poétique de Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller, this March at our Paris location.
Sixty years in the making, the library of Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller is the tangible incarnation of his passion for 16th-centry French poetry and La Pléiade. Ronsard, the Prince of Poets, is at the heart of this collection -without any equivalent, it is the most complete set ever assembled.
Ronsard’s contemporaries and successors, spanning from the most famous (Joachim du Bellay, Philippe Desportes, Jean-Antoine de Baïf, Rémy Belleau) to lesser-known names (Jean de La Gessée, Marc Papillon de Lasphrise) are also present through selected copies.
This inaugural session intends to pay tribute, of course, to these poets, but first and foremost, to the passion of a unique collector.
