Christie’s Old Masters department features European paintings and sculpture ranging from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods to Rococo and Neoclassicism. Highlights of the spring sale include a newly discovered canvas by Dosso Dossi — from his celebrated cycle for the studiolo of Alphonso d’Este — a Ludovico Mazzolino Lamentation formerly in the Duke of Leuchtenberg’s collection; a dramatic painting of Christ expelling the money lenders from the temple by Dirck van Baburen; and a strong group of Baroque works by artists such as Jusepe de Ribera, Pietro Paolini and Giovanni Battista Caracciolo. We are additionally pleased to present paintings by notable female artists Artemisia Gentileschi and Clara Peeters and to offer a newly discovered painting by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.
The sale ends with a selection of paintings and sculpture from The Kagan Collection in New York, including a Thomas Lawrence portrait of the abolitionist Jean Babington; a sketch by Guillaume Guillon-Lethière; a Johan Christian Claussen Dahl and a Jacques Sablet, with further lots to be offered in this single-owner online sale that closes on 23 April.
