‘Like Gauguin in reverse’: how Beatriz Milhazes went from the Tropics to Europe and back again, before taking on the world
Christie’s upcoming Outsider Art auction features masterpieces by the category’s top artists, as well as significant works by up-and-coming names in the field. The sale is led by a monumental double-sided watercolor by Henry Darger, a stellar limestone birdbath by William Edmondson, and multiple sophisticated drawings by Bill Traylor. Highlights also include a strong selection of works by European and Asian artists, such as Augustin Lesage, Adolf Wolfli, Guo Fengyi, and Hiroyuki Doi, as well as remarkable pieces by American artists including Thornton Dial, William Hawkins, AG Rizzoli, and Judith Scott. This sale includes selections from the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation, sold to benefit the Foundation and the Harlem Children’s Zone.
