This autumn, Christie’s auction of South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art will take place on 16 September during Asian Art Week in New York. Bringing together exceptional works spanning the 20th and 21st centuries, our catalogue celebrates the artists and the wide array of practices and styles that have come to define South Asian Art.
The auction features landmark works by masters of modern Indian art, including Francis Newton Souza's Woman with Lamp (1949) and Building in Trafalgar Square (1955), Maqbool Fida Husain's The Journey (1959) and Jehangir Sabavala's A Progression of Sails (1969). Further highlights include important works by Sayed Haider Raza, Ram Kumar, Manjit Bawa, Ganesh Pyne, K.H. Ara and Rameshwar Broota.
These masterpieces are complemented by significant groupings of works by Meera Mukherjee, N.S. Bendre and Zarina, alongside important pieces by Edwin Lord Weeks, George Keyt, Rashid Choudhury and Nalini Malani.
