The Abbott Guggenheim Collection: A New York Kunstkammer

Sale Overview

The Abbott Guggenheim Collection: A New York Kunstkammer realized $11,392,375/£7,515,626/€10,072,870.

Will Russell, Head of European Sculpture, comments: “On the heels of the record setting sale for any early European sculpture with Adriaen de Vries’ “Bronze Bacchic Figure Supporting The Globe,” which sold for $27.8 million at Christie’s New York in December, the renowned Abbott-Guggenheim collection achieved strong results for bronze sculptures. The sale was led by the magnificent “Bronze Figure of Hercules Pomarius” by Willem Danielsz. Van Tetrode, which realized $2,045,000. The selection of clocks, which was the impetus for Guggenheim’s collection, was met with enthusiastic bidding. Many top lots sold above their estimate, such as the German Engraved Gilt-Brass And Copper Striking And Automaton Lion Clock, by Philipp Miller, which sold for $965,000 against a low estimate of $150,000. We look forward to the June sculpture sale in Paris.”
