The Opulent Eye - 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture & Works of Art

Sale Overview

The Opulent Eye presents important furniture, sculpture and works of art from the 19th century. The sale reflects the eclectic and opulent styles of the period from the regal grandeur of Napoleon’s Empire to the Art Nouveau of Belle Époque Paris.

Offering furniture, lighting, marble and bronze sculpture, garden statuary, clocks, carpets and porcelain, the sale is led by a group of French museum quality furniture and works of art demonstrating the very finest craftsmanship and design of the 19th century. Highlights include a rediscovered exceptional coffre à bijoux, jewellery cabinet-on-stand, by Henri Fourdinois (Lot 100), a neo-Renaissance style cabinet and a sino-japonais style table de milieu by Edouard Lièvre (Lots 30 & 31), and a magnificent ‘art case’ piano by one of the most celebrated ébénistes of 19th century, François Linke (Lot 150).

Sculptural highlights include a pair of over lifesize cast-iron models of a lion and a tiger by the animalier sculptor Henri-Alfred-Marie Jacquemart, who was also commissioned to make the giant Rhinoceros outside the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
