The Opulent Eye - 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture & Works of Art

Sale Overview

The Opulent Eye sale offers the finest 19th century furniture, sculpture and works of art drawn from international collections and reflecting the eclectic styles of the period from the regal grandeur of Napoleon’s Empire to the Art Nouveau of Belle Époque Paris.

Presenting 243 lots of richly ornamented furniture, fine crystal chandeliers, lighting, clocks and marble statuary, the sale is expected to realise in excess of £2.5 million. Highlights include a magnificent ormolu centrepiece created by the Parisian silversmith Boulenger (Lot 100), a baby grand piano made for the Spanish aristocrat Madame d'Astoreca by François Linke (Lot 150), a beautifully carved marble statue of a nymph entitled 'The Coming of Spring' by the American sculptor William Couper (Lot 50), and a rare and large bronze figure of Victory by Jean-Léon Gérôme (Lot 175).

'The Opulent Eye' recalls a golden era of luxury and grandeur - an age of elegance; of the Paris Salon, of steam yachts, Newport Mansions, Russian Grand Dukes, winters on the Côte d'Azur, racing at Longchamp and waltzing in Vienna.  Offering works of art of such handcrafted skill and precious materials, that they would be impossible to recreate today, the sale presents the opportunity to create a lifestyle of beauty and incomparable opulence."
