This October, the 20th/21st Century Art auctions return with two landmark works at their centre: Piet Mondrian’s Composition III and Wassily Kandinsky’s Das bunte Leben.

Painted in 1920, Mondrian’s revolutionary Composition III marks a pivotal breakthrough in the development of his visionary Neo-Plastic style. One of just eight paintings he completed that year, the revolutionary painting is the most important work by Mondrian to be offered at auction in Europe since 2009.

Joining it is Kandinsky’s monumental Das bunte Leben (1907). Painted during an extended stay in Paris, the work brings together dazzling colour, Russian folklore and the avant-garde influences that would help shape Kandinsky’s radical new visual language. Das bunte Leben comes to auction following its landmark restitution to the heirs of Hedwig Lewenstein-Weyermann in June 2023.

Before their return to London for the 20th/21st Evening Sale preview, both works will be on view in Zurich, Paris, New York and Hong Kong.
