Event date 22 January - 6 February -
Event location New York
This February’s Classic Week in New York more than doubled the series record, totalling US$110 million across seven auctions. Michelangelo’s red chalk Study for the right foot of The Libyan Sibyl on the Sistine Chapel ceiling established a new auction record for the artist at US$27.2 million, nearly 30 times its estimate, in Old Master and British drawings.
Alongside was the exceptional Old Master paintings sale, led by the top lot in Canaletto’s Venice, the Bucintoro at the Molo on Ascension Day, which realised US$30 million, the third-highest price at auction for the artist.
Additional highlights included Artemisia Gentileschi’s Self-Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria, which set a new world record at US$5,687,000 and Botticelli’s Madonna and Child with St. John the Baptist, which achieved US$5,199,000.
Antiquities, led by a pair of Roman porphyry columns, circa 2nd century AD and Fine Printed Books and Manuscripts including Americana, where Johannes Kepler’s Mysterium cosmographicum (1596) both surpassed 90% sell-through by lot.
