Le Gavroche

Part I & II

  • Event date 10–24 APRIL 2024
  • Event location London

I am delighted with the results of the two-part auction celebrating the cherished artworks, special items and wines from Le Gavroche. It has been truly remarkable witnessing such spirited bidding for pieces of the restaurant’s rich history. These items hold immense significance for the Roux family, and I am pleased to see these iconic pieces find new homes
—Michel Roux

The final chapter in Le Gavroche’s illustrious 57-year legacy concluded with the highly successful auctions of exceptional wine, works of art, memorabilia and selected storied objects from the fabled fine French dining institution.

The restaurant’s guest books, signed by Charlie Chaplin, Madonna and Freddie Mercury, to name just a few of the restaurant’s celebrity diners, took top billing at £37,800 against a pre-sale estimate of £3,000–5,000. Le Gavroche’s sign — an iconic feature of London’s Mayfair — and the charming painting, The ‘Le Gavroche’ Boy, emerged as the top performing lots from Part I: The Restaurant. A private three-course meal for six guests cooked by Michel Roux and hosted by Christie’s sold for £18,900, with the proceeds going to the charity Hospitality Action.

Burgundy from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti proved the most sought-after from Part II: The Wine Cellar, selling for over twice their pre-sale low estimates in most cases. From Bordeaux, a pair of magnums of Château Lafite Rothschild 1945 realised £15,000, with four bottles of Château Haut-Brion from the same vintage fetching £10,625. The collection of vintage Champagnes, which included magnums of Krug 1971 and 1975, was notable for its pristine condition and strong performance. The influence of Le Gavroche on the culinary world is evidenced in the results of these auctions, and its legacy continues to inspire chefs and food enthusiasts worldwide.

Brothers Albert and Michel Roux Snr started a gastronomic revolution when they opened Le Gavroche in 1967, heralding the arrival of French haute cuisine to the heart of London. Michel Roux took over the restaurant in 1989 and continued his father and uncle’s legacy, winning numerous accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Michelin Chef Mentor Award.
