This October, the 20th/21st Century Art auctions return with landmark works and exceptional collections.
Leading the Evening Sale are Piet Mondrian’s Composition III, a pivotal breakthrough in his Neo-Plastic style, and Wassily Kandinsky’s monumental Das bunte Leben (1907) which comes to auction following its landmark restitution to the heirs of Hedwig Lewenstein-Weyermann in June 2023.
Distinctive collections also enrich the season. Bringing together more than 200 works from the personal collection of the Monsoon and Accessorize founder, Monsoon: The Peter Simon Collection is the highest-value single-owner collection ever offered at Christie’s London. Simon’s textile-sourcing travels through India sparked a collecting journey shaped by an instinctive eye for colour and design. Spanning Modernism to contemporary painting, the collection features Francis Bacon, Piet Mondrian, Joan Miró, Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso.
Radiant Modernism: From Signac to Albers brings together nearly 600 works assembled privately over forty years with exceptional connoisseurship and scholarly rigour. Centred on Signac and the artistic community around the Salon des Artistes Indépendants, it spans Neo-Impressionism, Symbolism and Expressionism, culminating in Albers’s abstract explorations.
