The no-reserve Remastered: Old Masters from the Collection of J.E. Safra – Selling Without Reserve casts a new light on the significant period of art history from the Dutch Golden Age through the 19th century.
Offered in January 2023 as the centrepiece of Classic Week in New York, the sale of Part I showed the power of the no-reserve strategy, totalling $18,525,600. A bound group of drawings by Jean-Baptiste Oudry for the famous Fables of Jean de La Fontaine led the auction with a sold price of $2.7 million, almost twice its low estimate.
Part II comes to auction this May, heralding the return of Old Master Week to Christie’s. Highlights include Jan Brueghel II’s oil on copper of a windmill towering over a panoramic landscape, a Neoclassical painting from 18th-century trailblazer Angelica Kauffmann and an extraordinary rendition of the Castle of Chillon (Château de Chillon) by Gustave Courbet.
Both in theme and price point, the works from the J.E. Safra collection are united in their accessibility and universal appeal.
