Lot Essay

Henry Louis Bischoffscheim (d. 1908), the banker, formed a considerable collection of pictures and predominantly French furniture for Bute House in the 1860s and 1870s. Both house and pictures were sold after the death of his widow, Tiepolo's Allegory with Venus and Time remaining in situ in the ceiling until its sale in these Rooms, 27 June 1969, lot 68, when it was acquired by the National Gallery, London.
