A GHIORDES 'TRANSYLVANIAN' PRAYER RUG
WEST ANATOLIA, 18TH CENTURY
The crimson red mihrab with three delicate floral sprays beneath a medium indigo stylized tendril vinery column-supported arch with a central hanging mosque lamp all surmounted by a sea-green flowerhead vinery-filled reserve, in a partially oxidized brown border of polychrome rosettes with curling leaf supports and floral vine, plain striped kilim skirt upper end, minor holes to upper right, several patches lower end, missing lower major border with original kilim end finish attached
Approximately 4ft. 10in. x 3ft. 11in. (147cm. x 119cm.)
Warp: reddish wool, at each end white then yellow-green, Z2S, sometimes very slightly depressed, undulating
Weft: 2 shoots red wool Z1, one undulating, the other somewhat more so Pile: wool, Z1, symmetrical inclining to the left, H3.2 x V3.2/cm.
Lower end: plainweave, 1cm. with red and 2cm. with yellow-green wool Z1 Upper end: as the lower but applied
Remarks: lazy lines
