A GERMAN GLAIVE (KUSE)

DATED 1649

With broad knifed-shaped blade, short rectangular socket and two long side-straps, etched on each face with a large panel framing a trophy of arms at the bottom, and the date and initials 'F.C.E.Z.O.' at the top, with, in between, on one face, the Imperial arms, and on the other, the crowned Burgundian crossed staves and fire-steels, all against a granular ground, on later wooden staff

Lot Essay

The initials stand for Ferdinand Carl Erzherzog zu Oesterreich, refering to the Archduke Ferdinand Carl (1628-62) of Austria, made Duke of Tyrol in 1632. These glaives were carried by his armoured (Hartschiere) bodyguard and are also found dated 1646
