With long triangular blade with medial ridge and upcurving claw-shaped wings at the base, tapering socket of octagonal section with two side-straps (shortened), etched throughout with strapwork and trophies of arms of fourteen quarterings including Saxony, between the wings on each face an oval shield of arms supported by the Imperial eagle, below a label inscribed 'I.G.CH.Z.S.' with the date, and later wooden staff (rubbed, areas of pitting overall)

Lot Essay

The letters stand for Johann Georg Churfürst zu Sachsen and refer to the Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony (1611-56)
