Typical of Cole's smaller works from the 1870s, a decade of prodigious activity, A Welsh Stream was exhibited at Birmingham and is recorded in the artist's ledger as being sold on 11 February 1873 for £63 to the dealer Arthur Tooth. Cole made various sketching tours to Wales, and worked up many finished paintings from the resulting watercolour sketches.
