Lot Essay

There is perhaps a valedictory air to the seventy-one year old Cole's modest version of the view made famous by James Thomson's poem The Seasons (1727), by Turner and, most recently, by Cole's son, George Vicat Cole in Richmond Hill, exhibited to critical acclaim at the Royal Academy in 1875. In this case the view upstream is taken from below the terrace with the Petersham Hotel seen to the left. The Thames from Richmond Hill is recorded in Cole's ledger as having been sold on 4 August 1881 for £60.

We are grateful to Dr T.J. Barringer for his help in preparing this and the following three entries.
