PIAZZETTA, Giambattista (1682-1754). Studi di pittura gia dissegnati da... Piazzetta ed con ora l'intaglio di Marco Pitteri. Venice: Giambattista Albrizzi, 1760.

Oblong 2° (310 x 440mm). Title in red and black with engraved vignette. Engraved head- and tailpiece, 3 initials, small etched self-portrait printed as tailpiece with surrounding engraved decoration, 48 plates of 24 subjects (24 by Francesco Bartolozzi in outline with cross-hatching and 24 by Marco Pitteri with roulette work), extra-illustrated with an additional engraved title (from the French edition of 1764). (Repair to margin and crease in additional title.) Later marbled boards (lower joint slightly split, light rubbing to extremities).

FIRST EDITION OF PIAZZETTA'S DRAWING MANUAL, and one of the most attractive works from the great period of Venetian illustrated books. The self-portrait, dated 1738, is the only surviving etching by Piazzetta himself. The preliminaries include a biography of the artist by his friend and admirer, the publisher Albrizzi. This edition was swiftly followed by the more common inferior French edition of 1764. Cicognara 345; not in Morazzoni.
