Lot Essay

The cane-seated and squab-cushioned parlour or drawing-room chairs have reed-enriched and Grecian-scrolled legs and backs, while their ribboned-splats tied by spherical spindles correspond to those of a parlour chair illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's, Cabinet Dictionary, of 1803 (pl. 30). Their ornament would have harmonised with the other furniture commissioned by John Lloyd Wynne in 1806 such as a marble-topped commode, whose doors were fronted with blue silk (illustrated in Gillows' 1806 Estimate Sketch Book, no. 1803, preserved at the Westminster Library).
