Alfa Romeo have long been a leading name in motor car manufacture and in typical Italian style they evoke tremendous affection and enthusiasm as a driver's car. Their renown is based upon the competition success they enjoyed on both the road and track. Following the Second World War and under the direction of a brilliant design team the company built a fine range of mass produced vehicles with individual character and had a typical flair for styling. The pretty two-seat Spider was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966, quickly assuming the name Duetto in accord with the boat-tail styling of the rear end of the car. This was perhaps everybody's idea of driving an Alfa Romeo - neat styling, free revving engine, open top motoring with practical boot space for luggage and crisp handling when at the wheel. The engine was enlarged for the car as the model evolved with the 1750 Spider Veloce, and then the 2 litre version finally available by 1970.
This 1969 model was first registered in Jersey and subsequently imported into the UK in 1987. The car was completely restored over a period of about nine months at a cost in the region of £15,000; the body, for example, was comprehensively stripped down and rebuilt. This took over 460 man hours at a cost of £7,500 after which it was prepared and repainted for a further £2,000. This process included sand and oxide blasting after which it was etch-primed and then painted in a low-bake oven, the result of which is flawless panelwork and an exemplary paint finish. The interior was replaced with all-new upholstery, carpets, door panels and trim as required and a new black double-duck hood with hood cover fitted. At the same time the engine was totally dismantled, with subsequent examination for wear and rebuilt as necessary. The brakes and suspension received similar treatment, being stripped and rebuilt with a new brake servo unit fitted at the same time. The brightwork was also replaced with new items where necessary and the remainder was re-chromed and a new windscreen fitted. There is a comprehensive file of invoices detailing the work attested to and also detailing much of the car's history. As one would expect, the condition of the Alfa is extremely good and none of the more commonly seen corrosion difficulties found on these cars are displayed. The interior trim is virtually unmarked and in outstanding condition. The car has a long MoT certificate and is sold with the history file relating to it. In our opinion it would be a difficult task to find a better example.
