The later rectangular bevelled plate surrounded by a ribbon and laurel wreath border surmounted by Jupiter's eagle with outspread wings, ridden by a personification of love clasping lightening, beneath scrolled acanthus leaves with husk-trails, the sides with conforming scrolled acanthus leaves and bunches of flowers, with further flowers flanking a central shell with Venus' mask and conch shells, minor restorations

Lot Essay

The deep carving and foliage of this mirror is inspired by such works as the mirror of circa 1700, possibly from Venice and compared to the style of Andrea Brustolon, illustrated in G. Child, World Mirrors, London, 1990, p. 262, fig. 549.
