2° (440 x 315mm). 139 double-page engraved maps, hand-coloured in outline, by Sanson and others, one double-page view of Orleans by Inselin, one engraved leaf of text, maps numbered throughout in a contemporary hand. (Some maps slightly creased, a few shaved to image, the view of Orleans and a map of Italy torn.) Contemporary mottled vellum (spine label torn, extremities rubbed).
An interesting collection of Sanson maps, including the twin-hemispherical map of the world, 12 maps of the Americas, 13 of the British Isles, and 9 of the Middle East, Asia, India and China. The American maps include: Amérique Septentrionale, Sanson and Mariette, 1650; Le Canada, ou Nouvelle France, &c.., Mariette, 1656; Le Nouveau Mexique, et la Floride, Mariette, 1656; Les Isles Antilles, Mariette, 1656. The majority of the maps are dated before 1678, but the atlas includes a map of the Low Countries dated 1710, and part of Scotland, 1705.
