'Mihintale', circa early 1860s

Albumen print, 9 1/8 x 11 in., numbered in the negative, mounted on card, inscribed in ink on mount Mihintale. - Details of newly discovered stone-built structure on the south side of the Kaludiya Pokuna. It measures inside about 17 feet in length and 7 feet 6 inches wide.

Lot Essay

Joseph Lawton was a commercial photographer who established a photographic business c.1866 in Kandy. In 1870-71 he was employed to photograph the archaeological sites in Ceylon. Lawton's wife continued the business after his death in 1872.
