A MING INLAID LACQUER DISH
16th/17th century
The dark brown lacquer inlaid in the centre using pale mother-of-pearl flakes with a pair of birds amidst flowering peony branches issuing from rockwork, enclosed by a trellis-pattern band around the well and rim, the exterior decorated with a band of floral scrolls around the foot rim, some cracks and minor losses
8¾in. (22.5cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The central design of a rock and two birds on a tree has been popular at least since the Yuan dynasty, appearing for example on a related lacquer tray with mother-of-pearl inlay illustrated by Lee Yu-kuan in Oriental Lacquer Art, New York: Weatherhill, 1972, pl.67, p.133.
