Lot Essay

A similar 'dragon' plaque from the Garner Collection was exhibited at the British Museum in October-December 1973 and dated to the early 15th century, cf. Catalogue, London: British Museum Publ., no.40, pl.18; a similarly striking motif adorns the cover of an early Ming carved lacquer box, illustrated by K.J. Brandt, Chinesische Lackarbeiten, Stuttgart: Lindenmuseum, 1988, pl.32, p.83
