Lot Essay

This drawing was originally related to the central figures of the ceiling of the Oratory del Rosario of San Domenico in Palermo, datable to 1628, Palermo, loc. cit., II.4, illustrated. The altarpiece for the Oratory had been commissioned from Van Dyck when the Flemish artist came to Palermo, and had been delivered in 1624.
Turi Lombardo later connected the present drawing to a small fresco in the Church of Santa Maria del Canceliere, Palermo, now destroyed but known through a reproduction, Palermo, loc. cit., II.6.
