Lot Essay

This may have been intended as a pendant to a landscape of similar size and technique, now in the Pierpont Morgan Library, C. Dufour Denison, Le dessin français, chefs-d'oeuvre de la Pierpont Morgan Library, exhib. cat., Musée du Louvre, Paris and elsewhere, 1994, no. 52, illustrated. The latter drawing was engraved in 1759 by Houel when in the Blondel Dazaincourt's collection. The handling of both drawings is very similar, showing the same type of foliage with very precise parallel hatching throughout.
Alastair Laing has kindly confirmed the attribution of the present drawing to François Boucher.
