Lot Essay

Jean Louis Bouchet (active ca.1762-1789), horloger du Roi for the château de Bellevue in 1769.

The design of this cartel is inspired by a design by Lalonde which was engraved by Fois and published by Guilmard in Les Maîtres ornemanistes, no. 81.

A cartel clock of the same design with movement signed Buzot A PARIS from the collection of Baroness Renée de Becker is now in the Wrightsman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum (F.B.J. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, New York, 1966, vol. II, p. 363, no. 184). A further version also with movement by Bouchet is in the collection Heuer Bremen, R.F.A. and illustrated in European Pendulum Clocks, 1988, p. 41, no. 55.
A model of this design with dial signed Deribaucour was sold at Ader Picard Tajan, 8 April 1989, lot 91.
