Lot Essay
The Lal Darwaza Masjid is situated at the western edge of the town. It is believed that it takes its name ('Mosque of the Red Gate') from a gateway which once stood nearby and formed part of the palace of the queen of the Sultan Mahmud Shah (1440-52). This mosque is smaller than the Atala and Jami masjids, but similar in syle. One unusual feature is the treatment of the openings in the pylon: instead of arched doorways (see lot 35), two square piers with heavy capitals stand in an open space to create an effect like a screen. Built in the 15th Century, the mosque is still in use, though it was substantially renovated in 1992.
