Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912), a relatively unknown naval lieutenant, was appointed commander of the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904, at the recommendation of Sir Clements Markham. By the time Scott returned in 1904, his name was forever linked with Antarctic discovery. Scott, along with fellow officers Ernest Shackleton and R.W. Skelton, set sail from England in the Discovery on 1 August 1901, reaching the Antarctic Circle on 2 January 1902. Before wintering in McMurdo Sound, the ship cruised beside the Ross Ice Shelf, confirming what Sir James Ross had claimed to exist a mountainous land mass later named King Edward VII Land. From its winter base the expedition undertook exploration of the Antarctic interior by sledge, including a journey by Scott, Shackleton and Wilson to 82°16'S, the closest any man had ever come to the South Pole. The Scott expedition was also the first to ascend Ferrar Glacier, and its tied balloon ascent was (rivalled by Drygalski's) perhaps the first over the Antarctic continent. In addition to exploration, extensive scientific investigations on magnetism, meteorology, oceanography, geology and biology were carried out. It is these investigations which are reported in the published volumes offered in the following lot. They also offer an extensive illustrated record of the expedition, including Shackleton's photograph taken from his baloon at 'Balloon Bight', the first aerial photograph of the Antarctic.
