Lot Essay

John VI (1767-1826), son of Maria I and Peter III of Portugal, was successively Regent (1792-1816) and King of Portugal (1816-1826). In 1785, he married the Infanta Charlotte Joachima of Spain. He recognized the independence of Brazil under his son the Emperor Pedro I in 1825 but assumed the title of Emperor of Brazil himself for life.
