Four parts in one volume, 2° (440 x 305mm). Engraved title, 6 text leaves and 26 engraved plates, comprising: letterpress dedication with engraved headpiece, followed by 4 parts, comprising one page of letterpress introduction and 5, 8, 9 and 4 plates engraved by Cottart, many double-page, all on guards, letterpress privilege leaf dated 1686. 17th-century speckled calf, gilt spine with interlacing crescents and monogram of Jean-Antoine II de Mesmes [Olivier 1327, smaller versions of fer 3 and 4] alternating in compartments (rubbed, some spine repairs). Provenance: Jean-Antoine II de Mesmes (1661-1723, councillor to Louis XIV, president of the Parlement de Paris, binding); 2nd Marquess of Bute (Luton Library Bookplate).

A fine copy of architectural designs by the royal architect, Cottart, owned by a royal councillor, Jean-Antoine II de Mesmes. Among Cottart's celebrated buildings, are the château de Villacerf, built on an island in the Seine for Jean I de Colbert. The Fowler copy contained an extra plate in part II (7a-b) and a fifth part containing 4 plates; these, as in the Berlin copy, are not present here. Fowler 92; Berlin Kat. 2384.
