Lot Essay

This battle was amongst the first of England's great naval victories against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. The Channel Fleet under Lord Howe engaged the French fleet under Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse four hundred miles out in the Atlantic, and captured six ships-of-the-line and sank another.
