A LATE VICTORIAN PAINTED-METAL AND BRASS HUMIDOR
Attributed to W. Thornhill & Co.
In the form of a model mail coach, the central compartment with hinged lid under two of the four padded seats, enclosing a plain brass interior, with five lanterns two of which act as cigar-cutters and a stick holder, with match container to the reverse, simulating a luggage hold, the coach resting on four brass wheels, the front two wheels articulated, with an attachment for horses, the body inscribed 'COMET' to the reverse, with 'REDHILL, BRIGHTON, CROYDON' on one side and 'CRAWLEY, BRIGHTON BOLNEY' on the other, the reverse with 'BRIGHTON CRAWLEY', bracketed to a moulded rectangular mahogany base, decoration refreshed
10½in. (26.5cm.) wide; 11¼in. (28.5cm.) high; 26½in. (67cm.) deep

Walter Thornhill and Co. are listed in the Kelly's Directory of 1890 as: 'CUTTLERS, SILVER-SMITH, DRESSING CASE, TRAVELLING BAG, WRITING CASE, AND DESK MAKER'S: SPECIALITIES, LATEST NOVELTIES FOR WEDDING PRESENTS ETC... BY APPOINTMENT TO THE QUEEN AND THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES, THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES. Established in 1734 they were based at 144 New Bond Street and at 5 & 6 Little Bruton Street, Westminster.
