Portrait of Sir Humphrey Style, 1st Bt. of Langley, Kent, full-length, in a red doublet and green britches, with his gloves and cane in his right hand, a hound at his side and a hunt beyond

The sitter was the son of William Style and his first wife, Anne, daughter of John Eversfield of Den, Sussex. He was both a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to King James I and Cupbearer to King Charles I, and was created a Baronet on 20 May 1627. He married Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Robert Pershall of Lincoln's Inn, and widow of Sir Robert Bosvill, Knt., of Eynsford. On his death, in 1659, the baronetcy became extinct and the estate of Langley was inherited by his half-brother William, eldest son of his father's second marriage. This portrait is from a notable series of early 17th Century portraits of the Style family which were sold in the Wateringbury Place sale on 1 June 1978.
