Lot Essay

This picture was previously wrongly identified as a portrait of Anne of Denmark by Dr. Waagen (op. cit.) and in the Sotheby's sale of 27 November 1968. Elizabeth, Electress Palatine, was the daughter of King James I and Queen Anne. She married Elector Palatine Frederick V in 1613. They were, however, exiled from the Palatine by Emperor Ferdinad I as a consequence of Frederick V's acceptance of the Bohemian Crown on the death of Emperor Matthies in 1618.
