A fine French small-sword
late 18th century
With bright slightly tapering blade of flattened hexagonal section etched and gilt on both sides at the forte with a sun in splendour, a running fox, a flaming heart centred on a trophy of arms, and strapwork, the bright steel hilt chiselled in relief with long petal-shaped fluted panels, partly gilt flowerheads and foliage, and acanthus borders, all against a minutely stippled gilt ground, and original wooden grip bound with copper ribbon and twisted silver and brass wire, in black leather-covered wooden scabbard (tip missing) with chiselled and gilt steel locket and frog hook, and in fine original condition overall
