Lot Essay

For a brief discussion of Peeters' pictures of the New World, see P.C. Sutton, Nothern European Paintings in the Philadelphia Museum of Art from the Sixteenth through to the Nineteenth Century, Philadelphia, 1990, pp. 230-232, and H. Honour, The New Golden Land, European Images of America from the Discoveries to the Present Time, New York, 1975, p. 83. Sutton lists six pictures by Peeters which treat imaginary American scenes (variously described as West Indian, South American and Brazilian).
