The composition derives from Rembrandt's painting of the same subject in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, which is of vertical format and with the boat keeled to the right (see The Rembrandt Research Project, J. Bruyn et al., A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, II, Dordrecht, Boston, Lancaster, 1986, p. 302, no. A68).
