A LACQUER PEPPER-BLOWER AND A SMALL SHRINE
EDO PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)
The small pepper-blower comprised of a square container fitted with an angled, metal-mounted mouthpiece and with a metal latchpiece, decorated in iro-e takamaki-e on a roiro-nuri ground with the animals of the Zodiac--3 1/8in. (7.9cm.) long, 2in. (5.2cm.) wide, 1½in. (3.8cm.) high, dent and crack on one side; together with a small shrine in a lacquered oval case with two hinged doors opening to reveal the figure of a Bodhisattva standing on a tall lotus base, the figure fashioned of wood with gilded details, and the interior of the shrine painted deep blue with gilded diaperwork and lotus leaves, copper mounts--4¾in. (12.1cm.) high, nicks (2)
