The small rectangular writing box with rounded corners decorated on the lid and curved sides in black lacquer with rolling waves centering Matsushima, each lacquered in pewter grey, and the larger supporting a gold lacquer stand of pines; the underside of the lid and the lower portion of the writing box roiro-nuri applied with gold cranes and clouds; fitted with a lozenge shaped ink well and silver moon-shaped mizuire--6½ x 6 x 1 1/8in. (16.5 x 15.2 x 2.8cm.), corner cracks and edge nicks, surface scratches
