Lot Essay

In the 1880's and later, Menzel always accompanied his sister, Emilie Krigar-Menzel, to Kissingen (near Würzburg), where her favorite spa was located. In Kissingen, Menzel preferred to study the spa's guests and the inspiring location of the resort rather than participate in the spa's treatments. In Kissingen, Menzel found themes for a number of small genre scenes in gouache, such as Beer Garden in Kissingen, (H. Tschudi, Adolph Menzel. Abbildungen seiner Gëmalde und Studien. Auf Grund der von der National-Galerie im Früjahr 1905 veranstalteten Ausstellung, Munich, 1905, no. 609), as well as additional works from the 1880s including drawings in black lead, stumped, entitled Spa Garden in Kissingen, and Street in Front of the Spa Hotel in Kissingen after a Rain, Berlin, Königliche NationalGalerie, Austellung von Werken Adolph von Menzels, 1905, nos. 6619 and 6090, respectively.
