THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS APPOINTS A CONSUL TO FRANCE

The President of Texas "by and with the advice and consent of the Senate," appoints Henry Castro "to the office of Consul General of the Republic of Texas for the Kingdom of France." Houston was in the second year of his second term as President; four years later, Texas was admitted as a state and he became its first Senator. Chosen Governor in 1859, he was deposed in 1861 for refusing to take the Confederate oath of allegiance.
