A PAIR OF PATINATED BRONZE VASES
dedicatory panels dated Taisho 5 (1916), one vase signed tsukada shukyo kinkoku [tsukuda shukyo (1848-1918)] , one signed unno yoshimori kinzo [unno yoshimori ii (1864-1919)]

Each of baluster form cast in relief with large panels of linked scenes, one of a ship at anchor in a bay, the setting sun, birds and Mt. Fuji seen through clouds, the other of a sailor rowing in the moonlight toward a distant lighthouse in rolling waves, each of the large panels set above a wide frieze of smaller shaped reserves containing a different figure or figures and a rectangular panel bordered by two angels which encloses a gilded inscription on the merits of mankind, dated Taisho 5 (1916), 8th month; the iconography of the panels and figure reserves presumed Christian; each vase decorated in various soft metal patinae, including shakudo, shibuichi, silver and gilt and the ground of the vases greenish-grey; each inscribed on the bases as above and sealed--15¼in. (38.7cm.) high
