PATTON, GEORGE S., Lieutenant General. Autograph letter signed ("George S Patton Jr.") as Captain, to his mother, n.p. [France], 5 December 1917. 1 page, 4to, with original envelope.
"I HAVE NO TANKS TO WORK ON"
A busy Patton pens a letter to his mother seven months after arriving in France: "I had a letter from you and one from Pa and one from Nita when I got back here last night. I think your plan of going to Thomasville and staying is fine and it will be the best thing in the world for [my wife] B...My cut is doing fine and has never hurt me at all and I will get the stitches out in a day or so. I expect to be here for some time now as I have no Tanks to work on and will have to wait till some arive. I have been working on a report of my trip for the last seven and a half hours, so [I] feel stupid..."
Patton was sent to France in May 1917 where he attended courses at the French Tank School and observed British training methods. He was promoted to Major while organizing and directing the American Tank Center; he also formed and commanded the 304th Brigade of the Tank Corps.
