A SET OF TWENTY-TWO MAHOGANY DINING-CHAIRS
OF GEORGE II-STYLE, ALL 20TH CENTURY, SIX OF ONE DATE AND SIXTEEN BY ROBSON'S OF NEWCASTLE

Each with toprail carved with two eagle-heads centred by a back-scrolled upturned fan motif above a scrolling and pierced cartouche-shaped splat with central rosette above a carved cartouche of flowerhead-filled trellis, the serpentine uprights with scrolling foliage above the seat covered with red floral brocade on cabriole legs headed by scrolling foliage and terminating in claw-and-ball feet, three with similar red material, one with restored splat, one with restored upright, one inscribed JB, three W.M. and four CA in pencil and eight inscribed CJ in blue crayon (22)

The prototype for these chairs with their richly carved backs incorporating eagle-heads was the celebrated Roehampton House dining-chair, described as 'Style of Chippendale' in G.M. Ellwood's English Furniture and Decoration, n.d. (circa 1920), p. 71
