Lot Essay

A.J.Marlowe illustrates a mug bearing the mark LOCK and suggests that only two pieces are known, this being the third. Cf. Chinese Export Silver, John Sparks, no.40. He associates the name with the firm of Lock Hing, dealers in curios, silk, ivory and bronzeware, located in Shanghai, Canton and at 33 Queen's Road, Hong Kong at the turn of the century. He remarks on the large number of figures being typical of the two Lock-marked pieces
