Finely decorated in vibrant enamels and gilt to depict a group of five scholars, each wearing a voluminous patterned robe and inspecting at leisure a painting, one with a spotted deer at his side, above a grassy band below the sun emerging from clouds, the reverse with a pale aubergine gnarled pine above a jagged outcrop and bamboo alongside, with four shaped panels of iron-red peony reserved on a dense diaper ground at the sloping shoulders and a band of further bamboo and rocks encircling the waisted neck, the shallow cup-shaped mouth with a border of key-pattern picked out in the black against a green-glazed band
